Manuel Castro - Owner of Del Sol Farms

Manuel Castro- Owner

Del Sol Farms Inc., is located in Imperial Valley, California. Imperial Valley is among the nation's top agriculture regions. The rich and varied soil, combined with a year-round growing season allows this small corner of southeastern California to provide more than two-thirds of the nation's winter vegetables and a large supply of hay, beef and grains to the United States and beyond.

Del Sol Farms was established in 2004 and is owned and operated by Manuel Castro. While Del Sol Farms is a relatively young company, founded just over ten years ago, Manuel’s ties to farming extend all the way back to his grandfather in the Mexicali Valley of Baja California.

Manuel Castro learned farming from the seat of his dad's pickup truck. His father, Jose Castro, immigrated to the United States and started working at a local farm.

Jose quickly worked his way up to foreman position. Soon Jose’s integrity and dependable nature catapulted him into a Grower/Farm manager positions with a large companie. With the positions came greater responsibilities and experience in planting, watering and harvesting.

Manuel fell in love with the life, riding around the ranch with his dad and as soon as he was able to work a shovel his dad put him to work; by age 11 Manuel was driving tractors.

After high school Manuel worked under his dad and after a few years he and a friend started a labor contracting business. Manuel ran that for a few years and decided to sell out to his partner so he could persue his real love, farming.

Jose now works with Manuel at Del Sol Farms, where they grow a variety of produce such as broccoli, lettuce, cilantro, celery, potatoes and field crops such as alfalfa, sudan and bermuda on 3,500 acres.

INNOVATION

Manuel Castro, owner and president of Del Sol Farms, is a member of Imperial Valley Farm Bureau. He always stays on top of market changes and the politics associated with farming. Manuel combines the traditional wisdom he learned from his father with his strong intuition and knowledge that farming must adapt with changing technology and processes. The ancient profession of agriculture must adapt to survive.

Del Sol Farms works closely with its customers to deliver a product that precisely meets their needs. Whether changing the way a product is grown, cultivated, irrigated, harvested and delivered.

Food safety regulations and laws for the Farming Industry have changed drastically and have become one of the Farming Industry’s toughest issues and challenges.

Manuel Castro is an Imperial County Farm Bureau Board Member,
Western Growers Association and Imperial Valley Vegetable Growers Association Member,
Northend of Imperial County FSA Board Representative and
sits on the IID Water Conservation Advisory Board.
